Why Is It Called the Lake Above the Ocean?
At first glance, it looks impossible. From the right viewpoint, Leitisvatn appears to float hundreds of metres above the Atlantic Ocean, creating one of the Faroe Islands' most famous optical illusions.
The lake itself sits only around 30 metres above sea level, but the dramatic cliffs beneath it create the illusion that the water is suspended high above the ocean. It's a perspective that has fascinated visitors from around the world.
