What Is the Lake Above the Ocean?
The Lake Above the Ocean is the name commonly used for the dramatic view of Leitisvatn near Trælanípa. From the right angle, the lake appears to sit far above the Atlantic Ocean, even though the difference in elevation is much smaller than it looks.
The effect is created by perspective, steep sea cliffs, and the shape of the surrounding landscape. Together, they form one of the Faroe Islands’ most recognizable natural views.
Why Does the Lake Look Like It Is Floating?
The lake is not actually suspended high above the Atlantic. The illusion is created by perspective. From the viewpoint near Trælanípa, the steep cliffs below the lake appear much taller than they really are.
At the same time, the shoreline and surrounding slopes partly hide the true distance between the lake and the ocean. This makes Leitisvatn appear to sit dramatically above the sea.

Leitisvatn
Leitisvatn is the largest lake in the Faroe Islands and one of the country's most iconic natural landmarks. Stretching across the island of Vágar, the lake is surrounded by rolling hills, dramatic cliffs, and spectacular viewpoints that attract visitors from around the world.
Many international visitors know the lake as Sørvágsvatn, while locals often refer to it as Leitisvatn. Both names describe the same lake, although Leitisvatn is the traditional local name used for most of the lake.
Trælanípa
Trælanípa is the dramatic cliff viewpoint overlooking Leitisvatn and the Atlantic Ocean. It is from this area that visitors experience the famous perspective where the lake appears to rise far above the sea.
The name is often translated as “Slave Cliff.” According to local tradition, enslaved people were once pushed from the cliffs during the Viking Age. The story forms part of the folklore surrounding the landscape, although the exact historical details are difficult to verify.

The viewpoint overlooks steep cliffs, open ocean, and the southern end of Leitisvatn.
Local legends and history have made Trælanípa more than just a scenic viewpoint.
Visitors should remain a safe distance from the cliff edge. The terrain is natural, exposed, and can become slippery in wet or windy conditions.
Bøsdalafossur
At the southern end of Leitisvatn, the lake reaches one of its most dramatic moments. Here, the water flows over the cliffs and into the Atlantic Ocean through the spectacular Bøsdalafossur waterfall.
Although the waterfall is only a short distance from the famous viewpoint, many visitors are surprised to discover it. Combined with Trælanípa and the surrounding cliffs, it completes one of the most impressive coastal landscapes in the Faroe Islands.
